Navigating Roads License Plate Services in Calgary

A vehicle’s registration is an important part of a driver’s safety and legality on the road. It is also a way to show pride in your city or province. Whether you want to display your hometown team, honor your military service or just say thanks to the Canadian forces and first responders, there are a variety of licence plate services available in Calgary.

Personalized plates are available for passenger cars, trucks, trailers and motorcycles. A maximum of six characters are allowed per plate. The lettering must not reference or ridicule any race, religion, ethnic origin or ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, opinion, political figure or dignitary, affiliation or organization. The numbering on the plate cannot conflict with any standard-issue Nevada numbers. The design must be approved by the DMV staff before the plates can be manufactured.

If you have purchased a right-hand drive car from another jurisdiction, like Japan for example, an out-of-province inspection is required to register it in Alberta. Obtain the necessary forms at our registry, open seven days a week.

You must register your vehicle with the Registries of Alberta within 90 days of moving to the province. New residents can avoid lengthy daytime lineups by scheduling an appointment at any AMA centre online or in person. Bring your driver’s license, insurance pink slip and vehicle registration certificate.

If you are a veteran, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion or the Canadian or Allied Merchant Navy, you may qualify for a free veterans’ licence plate. You can add a personal message to this plate, however normal fees apply.
